Greetings from JP!
In this new year of 2024, we are starting a monthly newsletter. Through this newsletter, we’ll bring to you curated short articles and recommendations from JP members.
Since we still have slots left in our upcoming The Meisner Acting Intensive workshop, we’d like to share with you about what the class might be like.
We interviewed D and K, two students from our Meisner Core Program last year which was also taught by Alecx Lorica:
1. What was the Meisner class like? Did you enjoy it?
D: It was pretty methodical yet liberating. I enjoyed it.
K: The Meisner class that I did with Jakarta Players was a really great dive into the famous Meisner technique. I enjoyed it very much and had a lot of fun.
2. What did you learn from the class? What are some things that help you with your acting?
D: I learned that opening one's self fully and just accepting the made up situations wholeheartedly when acting can definitely elicit great performances when acting. Learning how to break down these emotional roadblocks or apprehensions definitely helped with freeing one's self when acting.
K: I learned a lot about myself through the process of following my impulses as naturally and as freely as possible. I realized that there was a lot of internal work to be done so that I can be more present and truthful when I am acting. And I also realized that working off of your acting partner is so important! Being truly affected by one another and using our imaginations specifically and meaningfully helped me come up with so many more interesting choices that I would never have thought possible.
3. Who would you recommend the Meisner class to?
D: I would recommend any actor to try learning Meisner. At the very least they could augment some Meisner skills to their own way of working.
K. I would recommend this Meisner workshop/class to any actor, beginner or advanced. A lot of the basics of Western-style acting is so much easier to understand when you get on your feet and try out Meisner's exercises. They are such helpful tools in improving your acting instincts. And it really helps that Alecx and Dan are so good at making sure that all their students feel absolutely safe in their sessions!
If you would like to learn Meisner yourself, join our upcoming intensive program! If you’d like to learn more, feel free to read the program details here.

Want to find something to fill an afternoon or two? You’ve come to the right place.
1. Make Some Noise (improv web show series by Dropout.tv)
This web series by Dropout features three comedians doing a series of improvisational prompts they’ve never seen before. The wit and acting on display are truly awe-inspiring, and, most importantly, highly entertaining.
2.Spring Awakening: Those You've Known (documentary by HBO)
Spring Awakening was a hit Tony Award Winning musical based on a German play of the same name that opened on Broadway in 2006. In this documentary, the original cast and crew reunite for a special benefit concert for The Actors Fund and look back on their experiences in the original production. It’s a real treat for long-time fans of the musical, and a delightful look behind the scenes as they recount their experiences of bringing the story to life.
